Great read. I have read about this topic before but you have said it all and made comparisons within the ideas of "real value" and "perceived value" to effectively illustrate your point.

To me, getting a girl to work for your attention is just plain fun, for both parties involved. About a year ago I was walking up the Hill in Boulder CO, lots of beautiful women. My buddy and I were on our way to the next bar when we stopped to have a smoke. Out of nowhere these two girls come up to us and one is loud and the other is quite. The loud (probably drunk) demands a cigarette from me, I say "what do I get in return?" she replies with "hmmm I don't know" with which I replied "hmmm well then 'I don't know' if you deserve a cigarette..." keeping eye contact not giving in to her at all. During this time my friend is looking at me like I am going to mess this up, like I am ruining our chances or some shit. Meanwhile her friend stopped, interrupted, looked me in the eye and actually complimented me on being a man. She said "thank you for not making it so god dammed easy, guys need to learn to do this more, they need to be men."

My friend looked at me and I could tell he was seeing the light. It had made an impression on him. Now, in this instance she broke my fourth wall and exposed my tactics, but nonetheless, she recognized it and praised my challenge. We followed them to a nearby club and the rest is history. This story illustrates how women WANT these types of interactions. They WANT to be challenged so attraction and sexual energy can build. This builds perceived value as well.
